The ride in Burlington took place in 2014 and it was really a special event of the city. 263 riders participated and $850,000 were raised. Everyone should ride, donate and get involved. During the ride JDRF team supports every rider and nobody is left alone. Riders’ friends and families come out to support them. The preparation part is very important, however it’s not a serious race – it’s just a social ride to raise money for the research. The money which is raised during the ride goes directly to the research. The after party is also an amazing social party where all the participants gather together and celebrate their success. The sector includes both health care and social assistance because it is sometimes difficult to distinguish between the boundaries of these two activities. The industries in this sector are arranged on a continuum starting with those establishments providing medical care exclusively, continuing with those providing health care and social assistance, and finally finishing with those providing only social assistance. The services provided by establishments in this sector are delivered by trained professionals. All industries in the sector share this commonality of process, namely, labor inputs of health practitioners or social workers with the requisite expertise. Blacksburg is dominated economically and demographically by the presence of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, better known as Virginia Tech, a Virginia land-grant university. The town is also home to MOOG, a major contractor for the defense department and the health care industry. Points of interest that showcase the city’s local culture include the Armory Art Gallery, Caboose Park, Kent Square, Hahn Horticulture Garden and Lyric Theatre. Annual town events include the International Street Fair and Parade, as well as Steppin’ Out, the town’s first annual street festival. Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin. It occurs when the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, called beta cells. While its causes are not yet entirely understood, scientists believe that both genetic factors and environmental triggers are involved. Its onset has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle. There is nothing you can do to prevent T1D, and—at present—nothing you can do to get rid of it. While people with T1D rely on insulin therapy to control their blood sugar, insulin is not a cure nor does it prevent the possibility of the disease’s serious side effects. JDRF is the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. JDRF’s goal is to progressively remove the impact of T1D from people’s lives until we achieve a world without T1D. People with T1D would never benefit from JDRF-funded innovations without our donors. The work to create transformational therapies to help people live with T1D cannot—and must not—be allowed to stop because dedicated researchers lack funds. Laboratory studies that are unlocking the mysteries of T1D and accelerating progress toward a cure and prevention must continue. With the generous help of supporters, JDRF is pursuing a diversified, dynamic research agenda that is moving us ever closer to a world without T1D. JDRF is committed to doing the greatest good for the largest number of people in the shortest amount of time so we understand the importance of funding these trials.
