Technology can play a huge role in improving the education system in India. There are many companies in the country providing tech-based learning solutions, of which some are focusing on K12 segment while some others are targeting higher education. Then there are social learning and online test preparation platforms providers. Given the size of the market, many of these companies are getting good traction in India and have already started generating revenues. Hence, this space has been attracting a lot of VCs interest of late.
However, the lack of proper infrastructure like faster internet connectivity has been a key problem many of these online players are facing. Experts feel that India needs to address this problem immediately in order to attract foreign players and thereby improve the overall system.
In a panel discussion at the recently-concluded VCCircle Education Investment Summit 2013, experts discussed the Indian online education market, the opportunities and challenges. The panellists include Katelyn Donnelly, executive director, Pearson Inc; Tonmoy Shingal, co-founder and COO, Mettl; Benjamin Grubbs, head of content partnerships, YouTube; Rajeev Pathak, CEO, edreams Edusoft; and Sandeep Aneja, founder and MD, Kaizen Private Equity.
