Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin. It occurs when the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, called beta cells. While its causes are not yet entirely understood, scientists believe that both genetic factors and environmental triggers are involved. Its onset has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle. There is nothing you can do to prevent T1D, and—at present—nothing you can do to get rid of it.
While people with T1D rely on insulin therapy to control their blood sugar, insulin is not a cure nor does it prevent the possibility of the disease’s serious side effects. Even with intensive disease management, a significant portion of their day is still spent with high or low blood-sugar levels, placing people with T1D at risk for devastating complications such as heart attack, stroke, blindness, kidney disease and amputation. Settled in 1829 at the meeting point of several Indian trails, it was named for U.S. Pres. Andrew Jackson and was known successively as Jacksonburgh, Jacksonopolis, and finally Jackson in 1833. In 1839 Michigan’s first state prison was built there; it has continued to be a major employer in the city. It moved from its original location to just north of town in 1930. The town became the eastern terminus for the Michigan Central Railroad in 1841, and five other railroads soon passed through Jackson, making it an important regional rail centre. The Republican Party held its first convention on July 6, 1854, in Jackson. The city became an early leader in the production of automobiles. You’re the reason for our success. Take Action – Don’t be indifferent! George Hincapie, a famous cyclist, every year organizes Hincapie Gran Fondo in JDRF’s name. Hincapie Gran Fondo is a nice way to escape from daily problems and to forget about diseases. During the ride some great professionals and Huncapie’s friends join the ride. All JDRF Riders are invited to exclusive Gran Fondo after party. Everybody talk about their experience they had during the ride. Gran Fondo is all about challenging yourselves. It’s not a race – everyone has his different goals. There is no pressure to perform – the only pressure your put on yourself. The after party is a great way to celebrate what they have achieved during the day. During the ride they always remember about JDRF and ride to turn type one into type none. JDRF works every day to change the reality of this disease for millions of people—and to prevent anyone else from ever knowing it—by funding research, advocating for government support of research and new therapies, ensuring new therapies come to market and connecting and engaging the T1D community.
